Urbie Green The New Trombone Collective is always searching for challenging new projects to present the trombone to a broad audience. Urbie Green, born in 1926, is one of the big hero’s of the members of the collective. They are especially fascinated by his sound and way of playing. About 65 years ago Urbie dominated the New York jazz scene. His album “21 Trombones” was a milestone in the recording history of the trombone.
In 1967 Urbie Green brought together the best trombonists of New York. They recorded all the numbers with a strong rhythm section, according to a tight schedule. It was a magical happening - musicians who were normally competing with each other now stimulated each other to even greater heights.
Guitar player Bucky Pizzarelli about Green: “There are no words to describe what Urbie did. Urbie was in a class by himself. You had a few great trombone players in New York but Urbie was alone at the top."
Fascinated by the album a idea originated to recreate it live. This will be happening on July 5th. Combined with world premiers of new pieces for the same combination it will be a unique event. The concert will be recorded for a documentary about Urbie Green.
